Day Trips from Kyoto Map
This day trips from Kyoto map groups every destination on the site by direction, so you can see at a glance what sits south, west, north and east of the city. Each place gets one line: the train, bus or Shinkansen that reaches it, how long it takes, the fare, and whether a bookable tour covers it or you go on your own. Fares and times come from official and operator sources listed throughout. For the full tour comparison, prices and reviews, use the day trips from Kyoto homepage, and for a single destination use its hub page linked in each block.

Quick answer The map at a glance
The nearest day trip from Kyoto is Uji, about 20 minutes and 240 yen by JR train. The longest trips are Ise and Kanazawa, each around two hours away, and Koyasan needs a change in Osaka. Hiroshima by Nozomi takes about 1 hour 36 minutes.
Key takeaways
- South is easiest: Nara is 45 minutes by JR for 720 yen, and the Nara, Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama bus tour covers it for $79.
- West along the coast: Osaka is 29 minutes by JR Special Rapid, Himeji about 90 minutes, and Hiroshima and Miyajima with Shinkansen tickets runs from $114.
- North needs commitment: the Amanohashidate limited express takes 2 hours, or take the Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama bus tour at $86.
- The comparison table on the homepage lines up every tour side by side, and the free day trips guide covers the do-it-yourself side.

South of Kyoto: Uji, Nara, Koyasan and Ise
South is where the shortest and the longest trips live. Uji and Nara are half-day territory, while Koyasan and Ise need an early start or an overnight.
Uji
The closest destination on this map. The JR Nara Line reaches Uji in about 20 minutes by rapid or 30 minutes by local, both 240 yen one way, and the Japan Rail Pass covers it. From Keihan, change at Chushojima for the Uji Line, about 30 minutes and 400 yen, which suits travellers starting in Gion.
Byodo-in costs 700 yen to enter, with the Phoenix Hall interior at 300 yen extra in visits of up to 50 people. The Nara and Uji Matcha Day Tour covers Uji and Nara together for $126.24 with Byodoin admission and a matcha session included. Full details in the day trip from Kyoto to Uji guide.
Nara
The JR Miyakoji rapid runs every 30 minutes from Kyoto Station, takes 45 minutes and costs 720 yen. The Kintetsu limited express is faster at 35 minutes for 1,280 yen, and the ordinary Kintetsu express is 45 minutes for 760 yen with no surcharge. Kintetsu Nara Station sits close to the deer park and Todai-ji, while JR Nara is a 15-20 minute walk further.
Bookable options that reach Nara include the early morning walking tour at $68.02, the afternoon coach tour at $100.40, the bus tour at $79 and a private day with a licensed guide at $187.85. See the day trip from Kyoto to Nara hub and the Kyoto to Nara train page.
Koyasan
A temple town on a mountain in Wakayama, reached from Nankai Namba in Osaka, so it needs a transfer through the city first. The Koya limited express takes 80 minutes to Gokurakubashi for 1,880 yen on an e-ticket, with only two direct trains a day, then a 5 minute cable car at 500 yen and a 10 minute town bus at 460 yen. The slower express route takes 100 minutes for 930 yen.
The Koyasan World Heritage Ticket from Namba costs 3,980 yen digital and covers two days plus town buses. Kongobu-ji charges 1,000 yen. A day here is possible but tight, and temple stays at 10,000 to 40,000 yen with dinner and breakfast make a strong overnight case.
On your own.
Ise
The grand shrine in Mie Prefecture is one of the longest trips on this map. A direct Kintetsu limited express runs from Kyoto Station in about 2 hours to Iseshi or Ujiyamada, and all seats are reserved with a separate express ticket. Slower Kintetsu express trains take about 165 minutes for 2,430 yen.
Naiku, the inner shrine, is free and opens daily from 5:00, closing between 17:00 and 19:00 depending on season, and sits 10-15 minutes by bus from Ujiyamada or Isuzugawa Station. Given the travel time either side, many travellers turn this into a two-day trip rather than a day trip. On your own.
Sources: JR West, japan-guide: Kyoto day trips
West: Osaka, Kobe, Himeji and Hiroshima
The western corridor follows the JR line and the Shinkansen. Osaka and Kobe are quick city hops, Himeji is a castle day, and Hiroshima stretches the definition of a day trip but is doable by Nozomi.
Osaka
The JR Special Rapid between Kyoto Station and Osaka takes about 29 minutes for 580 yen. Hankyu runs Osaka-umeda to Kyoto-kawaramachi in 43-48 minutes for 410 yen, and the Keihan Main Line from Yodoyabashi to Sanjo takes about 50 minutes for 490 yen. The Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto takes 13-15 minutes but costs 1,450 yen unreserved, so it rarely makes sense.
Osaka Castle's main tower costs 1,200 yen and opens 9:00-18:00. The Nara Park, Osaka and Kobe tour links both cities in one 10.5 hour bus day for $129, with monument entrance fees not included. More in the day trip from Kyoto to Osaka guide.
Kobe and Arima Onsen
The JR Special Rapid reaches Sannomiya directly in about 50 minutes, four trains an hour, with no limited express fee, and sources differ on the exact fare, so check it on the day. Hankyu needs one change at Juso and takes about 60 minutes, and the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe takes about 30 minutes. From Shin-Kobe, the Nunobiki ropeway runs 10 minutes up to gardens with about 75,000 herbs, a ticket costing 2,500 yen for adults from April.
Arima Onsen sits 30-40 minutes from Kobe by subway and train for 720 yen, or 25 minutes by bus from Sannomiya for 600 yen, and a few direct buses a day leave Kyoto Station for 1,850 yen. The same Nara, Osaka and Kobe tour covers Kobe. See day trip from Kyoto to Kobe.
Himeji
The JR Special Rapid from Kyoto takes about 90 minutes and costs 2,210 yen one way, running roughly every 15 minutes. The Shinkansen cuts that to 43-50 minutes for 4,740 yen unreserved. From Himeji Station the castle is a 15-20 minute walk down Otemae-dori.
Admission rose to 2,500 yen for adults from March, with under-18s free, and the Koko-en garden combination ticket is 2,600 yen. The castle has steep stairs and no elevator. On your own is the normal way here, no tour on this site reaches Himeji.
The day trip from Kyoto to Himeji page has the full breakdown.
Hiroshima and Miyajima
The longest practical day trip. The direct Nozomi takes about 1 hour 36 minutes from Kyoto at 10,770 yen unreserved, so it costs real money but fits in a day. The Peace Memorial Museum is 200 yen and the park is free, and tram 2 or 6 from Hiroshima Station reaches the A-Bomb Dome stop in about 15 minutes for 240 yen.
For Miyajima, the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi takes 25 minutes for 420 yen and the ferry 10 minutes for 200 yen plus a 100 yen visitor tax. Several tours cover it: the Shinkansen tour with lunch at $114 including museum and shrine entry, ferry and an okonomiyaki lunch, and the bullet train option at $119 without lunch. Full detail in the day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima and Kyoto to Hiroshima pages.
Katsuo-ji
A temple in the Osaka hills known for its victory daruma dolls, paired on this site with Kyoto's own highlights rather than as a solo trip. Adult admission is 500 yen, and a Hankyu bus from Minoh Kayano Station takes about 20 minutes for 800 yen, so it is a slow but feasible do-it-yourself run. The simpler route is the Katsuo-ji, Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji bus tour at $82, which combines the temple with the bamboo grove and the Golden Pavilion in one 9-10 hour day, though note that Katsuo-ji and Kinkaku-ji admission is an extra fee on that tour.
North: Kurama, Ohara and the Sea of Japan Coast
North of the city the mountains rise quickly. Kurama and Ohara are easy half days, while Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama sit far out on the Tango coast and Miyama's thatched village needs a bus connection.
Kurama and Kibune
The Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi reaches Kurama in about 30 minutes and Kibuneguchi in about 28 minutes, at 470 yen for adults, with trains every 15-20 minutes. Kurama-dera charges a 500 yen mountain fee and opens 9:00-16:15, and Kifune Shrine is free and open 6:00-20:00. The classic route is the hike between Kibune and Kurama, about one hour up plus 30 minutes down to Kurama town.
Buses from Kibuneguchi to Kifune Shrine cost 200 yen, a section not covered by the Subway and Bus 1-day Pass. This one deserves its own guide, so see the Kurama Kibune day trip from Kyoto page. On your own.
Ohara
Kyoto Bus 17 runs direct from Kyoto Station to Ohara in 60 minutes for 630 yen every 30 minutes, and buses here are not covered by the Kyoto 1-day bus pass. An alternative is the subway to Kokusaikaikan, 20 minutes and 290 yen, then bus 19 for 20 minutes and 400 yen. Sanzen-in costs 700 yen and is a 10 minute uphill walk from the bus stop.
The temple's own site gives hours of 8:30-17:00 from March to early December. Other temples in the village start from 300 yen. On your own, and an easy addition to the free day trips from Kyoto list.
Amanohashidate
The direct JR Hashidate limited express takes 2 hours from Kyoto and costs 4,800-5,400 yen one way, with seat reservations mandatory. The alternative is a JR limited express to Fukuchiyama, 75 minutes, then the Kyoto Tango Railway for 40-60 minutes. The Tankai highway bus takes about 2 hours for 3,200-3,400 yen.
The 3 km sandbar takes about 45 minutes to walk, the Kasamatsu Park cable car or chairlift costs 800 yen for adults, and sightseeing boats run every 30 minutes for 800 yen one way. Two bus tours reach it: the Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama tour at $86 and the Amanohashidate and Ine bus trip at $55.10. More at day trip from Kyoto to Amanohashidate.
Ine
A fishing village on the Sea of Japan with about 230 funaya boathouses lining the bay. From Amanohashidate the hourly local bus takes about one hour for 400 yen, or the sightseeing express bus takes about 40 minutes for 1,200 yen one way, running daily from October to late December with three trips each way and no reservations. The Ine Bay cruise takes 25 minutes and costs 1,200 yen for adults, with large boats leaving every 30 minutes from 9:00 to 16:00 without reservation.
A direct Kyoto bus to Ine ran in summer 2026 at 4,000 yen but has ended for the year. Both north coast bus tours link Ine with Amanohashidate in a single day.
Miyama
A thatched-roof village in the Nantan mountains north of the city. From Kyoto you ride the JR line about 45 minutes to Hiyoshi, then a Nantan bus for 50 minutes and 600 yen to Kita. Kayabuki-no-Sato is free to enter and the Folk Museum costs 300 yen, open 10:00-16:00 and closed Mondays.
Watch the return bus, which leaves around 18:00 on weekdays but 16:00 on Sundays and holidays, so the day cannot stretch late. Given the two-bus connection, most visitors find the Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama bus tour at $86 far easier than doing all three by public transport. On your own is workable for the village alone.

East: Lake Biwa, Mt Hiei and Kanazawa
East of Kyoto the lake plain of Shiga opens up within half an hour, and beyond it the Hokuriku Shinkansen now runs all the way to Kanazawa.
Otsu and Lake Biwa
Japan's largest lake starts just east of the city. Direct JR special rapid trains run twice an hour from Kyoto to Omi-Hachiman, taking 35 minutes and costing 680 yen, where the Hachiman-bori canal cruises last 35 minutes and cost 1,500 yen by engine boat or 1,300 yen rowed, running 10:00-16:00. For the water itself, the Biwako Valley ropeway on the west shore runs in the green season from late April to late November, 9:00-17:00, at 5,000 yen for adults on regular days.
On your own throughout, with the caveat that the ropeway can suspend operations in severe weather.
Hikone
An easy direct run east. JR special rapid trains take 50 minutes from Kyoto and cost 1,170 yen, and the Shinkansen via Maibara cuts it to about 30 minutes at 2,350 yen unreserved. Hikone Castle and garden cost 1,000 yen, or 1,500 yen with the museum, and open 8:30-17:00 with no closing days.
The castle is a 15 minute walk along the main road from Hikone Station. On your own, the simplest of the eastern trips to arrange, and it pairs naturally with Omi-Hachiman on the same JR line for a full lake day.
Mt Hiei and Enryaku-ji
The temple complex crowning the mountain between Kyoto and the lake. Enryaku-ji admission is 1,000 yen for all three areas and covers entry 9:00-16:00 with no closing days. From the Kyoto side the Eizan Cablecar and Ropeway from Demachiyanagi costs 1,000 yen one way or 2,000 yen round trip, but does not operate from early January to mid March.
The Sakamoto Cablecar on the lake side takes 11 minutes at 870 yen one way or 1,660 yen round trip and runs all year. A direct bus from Kyoto Station or Keihan Sanjo takes about one hour for 840 yen and does not run from December to mid-March. On your own.
Miho Museum
A museum set in the Shiga hills east of the lake, reached only by bus in its operating seasons. The Teisan route 150 bus from JR Ishiyama Station takes 50 minutes and costs 1,000 yen one way, does not accept IC cards and runs only during the museum's spring, summer and autumn periods, so check the operating calendar before setting out. Admission is 1,300 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for students, open 10:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:00 and closed Mondays during regular operation.
On your own, and timing matters more here than on any other entry on this map because the access bus does not run year round.
Kanazawa
Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Tsuruga, the trip from Kyoto needs one change there, from the Thunderbird to the Shinkansen. Kyoto to Tsuruga takes 50-60 minutes and Tsuruga to Kanazawa 40-50 minutes, about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in total, with fares including surcharges typically 7,500-9,000 yen. Kenroku-en costs 320 yen and offers free early entry from about 4:00-6:00 depending on season, and the Kanazawa Loop Bus takes 20 minutes and 220 yen from the station.
That travel time makes it a genuine borderline case, closer to the two-day trip format than a standard day trip. On your own.
Which Places Need a Tour
Most destinations on this map work perfectly well by public transport, and the table below shows where a tour saves real effort and where the train wins. Fares and times come from the operator and tourism sources cited in each section above.
Tour or Train, Place by Place
Train and bus coverage decides this more than distance. Nara and Uji have dense rail service, so do-it-yourself is cheap and fast, but a guided day still adds context. The far north coast and Hiroshima are where tours earn their price, either by removing the bus connections or by bundling Shinkansen tickets with entries.

Day Trips from Kyoto Map: Questions
Which day trip from Kyoto is closest on the map?
Uji is the closest, about 20 minutes and 240 yen by JR rapid from Kyoto Station, with Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari effectively inside the city itself. The day trip from Kyoto to Uji guide covers the full day.
What is the farthest place you can visit as a day trip from Kyoto?
Ise and Kanazawa both sit around two hours away, Ise by direct Kintetsu limited express and Kanazawa with a change at Tsuruga, so both strain the day trip format. The two-day trip from Kyoto guide handles them better.
Which day trips from Kyoto work without a tour?
Most of them: Uji, Nara, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji, Kurama, Kibune, Ohara, Hikone and Lake Biwa all have direct trains or buses, with fares from 240 yen to 2,210 yen. The free day trips from Kyoto guide lists the cheapest do-it-yourself routes.
Where do tours save the most time from Kyoto?
The north coast, where the Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama tour at $86 replaces a 2 hour limited express plus two bus connections, and Hiroshima, where the $114 Shinkansen tour bundles rail tickets, ferry, entries and lunch. Compare them all in the homepage comparison table.
How do I plan a route using this day trips from Kyoto map?
Pick by direction: south for a short day, west by JR and Shinkansen, north for a long but scenic day, east for castles and the lake. The planning a day trip from Kyoto guide walks through timing, passes and booking.
