3-Day Trips from Kyoto: Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kanazawa

A 3 day trip from Kyoto opens up the places a single day cannot reach properly. This guide lays out two full routes. The western route links Himeji Castle, Hiroshima and Miyajima, with an optional stop in Okayama or Kurashiki. The northern route runs to Kanazawa for Kenroku-en. Both come as day-by-day plans with the real train times and entry fees, plus a cost table so you can see what three days out of Kyoto actually costs before you book anything. The bookable tours are compared on all day trips from Kyoto.

Quick answer The short answer

The best 3 day trip from Kyoto is the western loop: Himeji, Hiroshima and Miyajima, with the Kyoto to Hiroshima shinkansen taking about 1 hour 36 minutes at 10,770 yen non-reserved each way. The northern alternative is Kanazawa, about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours away with a change at Tsuruga.

Key takeaways

Why the Far Trips from Kyoto Need More Than a Day

Some places from Kyoto fit in a day out. The far ones only work properly when you give them two or three nights.

Hiroshima Punishes Day Trips

Hiroshima sits about 1 hour 36 minutes from Kyoto by direct Nozomi, and the non-reserved seat costs 10,770 yen one way. That is a long ride before you have seen anything. The one-day tours that do exist run 8-12 hours: the Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip with Shinkansen tickets and bus tour costs $114 and packs the Peace Park, a museum ticket, the Miyajima ferry and Itsukushima Shrine into a single outing, with an okonomiyaki lunch included. It works, but you see each stop briefly and the day is long.

Give the same pair three days and the balance changes. Day one absorbs Himeji Castle on the way. Day two covers the Peace Memorial Museum, which is open 7:30-19:00 and costs 200 yen, without rushing. Day three belongs to Miyajima, where the ropeway alone costs 1,100 yen one way and the Mount Misen summit trail adds 30 minutes on foot. A 3 day trip from Kyoto turns two exhausted highlight visits into three calm ones.

Kanazawa Is a Two-hour Trip Each Way

The northern route has the same problem. Since March 2024 every Kyoto to Kanazawa journey needs a change at Tsuruga, from the Thunderbird limited express onto the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Kyoto to Tsuruga takes 50-60 minutes and Tsuruga to Kanazawa another 40-50 minutes, so about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way. The fare with surcharges runs 7,500-9,000 yen one way.

Spread over two or three days, Kanazawa gives you time for Kenroku-en at 320 yen without watching the clock.

Two Days or Three?

If you only have two nights free, the 2 day trip from Kyoto guide covers the shorter versions of these routes. Three days earns you the extra stops: Okayama's Korakuen garden at 500 yen, or the Kurashiki canal district where walking the Bikan Historical Quarter is free. For genuinely single-day ideas, see the free day trips from Kyoto instead.

And for the Hiroshima leg specifically, the dedicated Kyoto to Hiroshima page breaks down every train option.

Himeji, Hiroshima and Miyajima in 3 Days

This is the classic western 3 day itinerary from Kyoto, moving west by shinkansen and ordinary JR trains. All times and fares below come from official operator and site figures. Note the Himeji Castle adult fee rose to 2,500 yen for non-residents from March.

  1. Day 1, morning

    Kyoto to Himeji

Take the JR Special Rapid from Kyoto Station to Himeji, about 90 minutes at 2,210 yen one way, with trains roughly every 15 minutes. The shinkansen is faster at 43-50 minutes but costs 4,740 yen non-reserved. Himeji Castle lies about one kilometre down Otemae-dori from the station, a 15-20 minute walk or a 5 minute bus for 210 yen.

  2. Day 1, midday

    Himeji Castle and Koko-en

Enter the castle, open 9:00-17:00 with last admission at 16:00. Adult admission is 2,500 yen, under-18s enter free, and the combined ticket with the Koko-en garden costs 2,600 yen. Expect steep stairs and no elevator in the tower, and carry your shoes inside.

  3. Day 1, late afternoon

    Himeji to Hiroshima

Ride the shinkansen on to Hiroshima. The Himeji to Hiroshima non-reserved fare is 7,910 yen and the trip takes about 55 minutes by Nozomi. Drop your bag at the hotel and rest. Hiroshima Castle's keep closed permanently in March, but the castle park and Ninomaru are free to wander, open 9:00-17:30 or until 16:30 from October to March.

  4. Day 2, morning

    Peace Memorial Park and Museum

From Hiroshima Station, tram line 2 or 6 reaches the Genbaku-Domu Mae stop in about 15 minutes for 240 yen. The Peace Memorial Park is free and open 24 hours, and the A-Bomb Dome is viewed from outside. The Peace Memorial Museum costs 200 yen and opens 7:30-19:00, so arrive early. It requires advance reservations for the first and last 90 minutes of the day.

  5. Day 2, afternoon

    Shukkeien or a slow afternoon

Walk 15 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Shukkeien Garden, open 9:00-18:00 or until 17:00 from 16 September to 15 March, closed 29-31 December. Alternatively, direct boats run from Hiroshima Peace Park to Miyajima in 45 minutes for 2,400 yen one way if you want to preview the island.

  6. Day 2, evening

    Evening in Hiroshima

Keep the evening simple. The tram that got you to the park for 240 yen runs the same route back. Sleep in Hiroshima, because the next morning starts early.

  7. Day 3, morning

    To Miyajima

Take the JR Sanyo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi, 25 minutes and 420 yen, covered by the Japan Rail Pass. The JR or Matsudai ferry takes 10 minutes and costs 200 yen, plus the 100 yen Miyajima visitor tax that ferry operators collect. Rail pass holders buy the 100 yen tax ticket separately.

  8. Day 3, late morning

    Itsukushima Shrine and Daisho-in

Itsukushima Shrine is about a 10 minute walk from the ferry terminal. Admission is 300 yen for adults, or 500 yen combined with the Treasure Hall, which is open 8:00-17:00 daily. The shrine opens 6:30-18:00 from March to 14 October. Continue to Daisho-in, free, open 8:00-17:00 and about 15 minutes from the pier.

  9. Day 3, afternoon

Mount Misen by ropeway or on foot

The Miyajima Ropeway costs 1,100 yen one way or 2,000 yen round trip, and the summit is a further 30 minutes on a steep trail from the upper station. The hiking route from Daisho-in to the summit takes about 1.5-2 hours if you prefer to climb. Check the tide tables the Miyajima Tourist Association publishes, because the great torii appears to float above a tide of 250 cm and can be walked to below 100 cm.

  10. Day 3, evening

Back to Kyoto, or one more stop

Take the shinkansen back east. Hiroshima to Himeji runs about 55 minutes by Nozomi at 7,910 yen non-reserved, so adding Himeji as a stopover on the return is an option if day one ran short. Otherwise ride through to Kyoto and be home for dinner.

  11. Optional, day 3 or 4

Okayama or Kurashiki instead of a straight run home

Break the return at Okayama for Korakuen garden, 500 yen for adults and open 7:30-18:00 from 20 March to 30 September, or take the combined Korakuen and Okayama Castle ticket at 800 yen. Kurashiki works too: walking the Bikan Historical Quarter is free and the Ohara Museum costs 2,000 yen, open 9:00-17:00 and closed Mondays. The JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass at 12,000 yen for 5 days only covers the Sanyo Shinkansen as far as Okayama, so trips beyond that stop still need a regular shinkansen ticket.

What 3 Days Cost in Trains and Entry

Every fare, pass and admission below comes from operator and official site figures for the western, northern and Koyasan routes in this guide. Where no figure exists for a leg you might want, it is left out rather than guessed.

The Full Price List

Use this table to add up your own version of the route. Note that the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass at 12,000 yen for 5 consecutive days covers the Sanyo Shinkansen only from Shin-Osaka to Okayama, so it helps with the Himeji legs and an Okayama stop but not the run to Hiroshima.

Does a Pass Pay Off?

For the western route as written, the big cost is the Kyoto to Hiroshima shinkansen, and no pass covers it fully. The JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass at 12,000 yen for 5 days covers the Shin-Osaka to Okayama stretch of the Sanyo Shinkansen, which suits a variant of this trip that stops at Okayama and skips Hiroshima. The nationwide 7-day Ordinary Japan Rail Pass rises from 50,000 yen to 53,000 yen at overseas agents from 1 October, and covers Hikari, Sakura and Kodama trains but you cannot ride Nozomi or Mizuho on it alone.

For a Koyasan or Nara based third day, the Kintetsu Rail Pass at 1,900 yen for 1 day covers Osaka, Nara and Kyoto on Kintetsu lines, though limited express supplements are paid separately.

Kanazawa Instead: The Northern Route

If you have done Hiroshima before, or castles leave you cold, the northern route trades the Inland Sea for Kenroku-en.

Getting There Since the Tsuruga Change

The journey changed in March 2024. You now ride the Thunderbird limited express from Kyoto Station to Tsuruga, taking 50-60 minutes, then switch to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for 40-50 minutes to Kanazawa. Count on about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours door to door, with a fare including surcharges of typically 7,500-9,000 yen one way.

Kenroku-en and the Castle Park

Kenroku-en is the main sight at 320 yen and is open 7:00-18:00 from March to 15 October and 8:00-17:00 from 16 October to February. Keen visitors use the free early entry from about 4:00-6:00 depending on the season, when the garden is near empty. The Kanazawa Loop Bus reaches it in 20 minutes for 220 yen.

A Second Day in Kanazawa

A second day in Kanazawa has no priced sights in this guide, so treat it as free time. A 3 day version of this route simply adds more days there. If Kanazawa tempts you into a shorter version, the 2 day trip from Kyoto page carries the two-night plan.

The Slower Third Option: Koyasan and Nara

Not everyone wants high-speed rail marathons. A quieter 3 day trip from Kyoto gives one day each to Nara, reached in 45 minutes for 720 yen by the JR Miyakoji rapid, and Koyasan. For Koyasan, the Koya limited express from Nankai Namba takes 80 minutes to Gokurakubashi at 1,880 yen on an e-ticket, then a 5 minute cable car for 500 yen and a 10 minute bus for 460 yen.

The Koyasan World Heritage Ticket bundles the trip at 3,980 yen digital and is valid for two days. Shukubo temple lodging costs 10,000-40,000 yen per person with dinner and breakfast, check-in by 17:00 and morning prayers around 6:00. Kongobu-ji entry is 1,000 yen.

If Nara alone fills a day, the day trip from Kyoto to Nara page has the full plan, and the day trips from Kyoto map shows how all these places sit around the city.

Prefer One-Day Tours?

If three days away from your Kyoto base is too much, guided one-day tours reach the far highlights, but they are long days and you should know what the price includes.

Hiroshima in One Long Day

The Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip with Shinkansen tickets and bus tour costs $114, runs 8-12 hours and includes round-trip shinkansen tickets, Itsukushima Shrine and Peace Memorial Museum entry, the ferry and an okonomiyaki lunch. Staff hand you the tickets at Kyoto Station but do not ride with you. Cancellation is free up to 7 days ahead, the strictest policy among these tours.

The Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip by bullet train costs $119 and runs the same 8-12 hour shape. It includes round-trip bullet train tickets from Kyoto if that option is selected, the Miyajima ferry and Itsukushima Shrine admission, but lunch is not included and you travel to Hiroshima on your own to meet the guide there. On the Sea of Japan side, the Amanohashidate, Ine Funaya and Miyama day tour costs $86 for a 10-hour coach day, with the cable car and Ine Bay cruise only in the included-ticket option. All three are honest single-day answers to the far destinations on this page, and all mean a very long day.

Where to Sleep on a 3-Day Trip

Two nights on the western route are easiest from a base at Hiroshima, with Himeji as a stop on the way. For the northern route, one base in Kanazawa covers both days.

3-Day Trips from Kyoto: Questions

What is the best 3 day trip from Kyoto?

The western loop wins for most first visits: Himeji Castle on day one, Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park on day two, Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine on day three. The direct Nozomi covers Kyoto to Hiroshima in about 1 hour 36 minutes, and the full route is laid out in the Himeji, Hiroshima and Miyajima itinerary.

How much does a 3 day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima cost in trains?

The shinkansen is the big line item at 10,770 yen non-reserved one way from Kyoto to Hiroshima. Add local trains such as the 420 yen JR Sanyo Line ride to Miyajimaguchi and the 240 yen tram to the Peace Park, and entry fees like the 200 yen museum. The cost table lists every published figure.

Does the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass cover Kyoto to Hiroshima?

No, not the whole way. At 12,000 yen for 5 consecutive days it covers the Sanyo Shinkansen only from Shin-Osaka to Okayama, so it suits a Himeji and Okayama variant rather than a Hiroshima run. Pass details are in the cost and passes section.

Can Kanazawa be done as part of a 3 day trip from Kyoto?

Yes, as a two or three-night base rather than a day trip. Since March 2024 the trip needs a change at Tsuruga from the Thunderbird to the Hokuriku Shinkansen and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way. The full northern plan is in the Kanazawa route section.

Is a one-day Hiroshima tour from Kyoto a good alternative?

It works if three nights is too many, but be ready for an 8-12 hour day. The Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip with Shinkansen tickets at $114 is the only one of the two that includes lunch and a museum ticket. For more options see the day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima page.

How do I get from Kyoto to Himeji on day one of the western route?

The JR Special Rapid takes about 90 minutes at 2,210 yen and runs roughly every 15 minutes, while the shinkansen takes 43-50 minutes for 4,740 yen non-reserved. The castle is a 15-20 minute walk from the station. More detail is on the day trip from Kyoto to Himeji page, and day one of the itinerary puts it in context.

Short on days? The Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip by bullet train covers the ferry and Itsukushima Shrine admission, with round-trip tickets from Kyoto if you pick that option.
